Fuller House Boss Explains Steve Urkel Shout-Out: ‘We Have Some Fun Ideas’
If ever there was a reason for Netflix to give Fuller House a fourth season, this is it.
In the comedy’s third season finale — which I’m not spoiling here, so calm down — a familiar face from the Tanners’ past resurfaces, prompting D.J. to say, “I wonder who else we can track down. I wonder what Urkel’s up to.”
This is, of course, a reference to the 1991 episode of Full House in which the Tanners are visited by Family Matters‘ Steve Urkel (played by Jaleel White). And according to series creator Jeff Franklin, D.J.’s Urkel shout-out might have been more than just a throwaway line.
“I loved when Urkel was on Full House, so I’d love to see him back on Fuller House,” Franklin says. “I’m good friends with Jaleel, and we’ve talked about it. It’s a really big deal for Jaleel to bring this character back, so I’m not sure that he wants to — but if he does decide to, this would be a great way for him to reprise the character. And who knows, maybe that’ll happen. I’d love to see it. I think everybody’s curious about whatever happened to Steve Urkel, so the audience would really enjoy it. We have some fun ideas, so we’ll see how that shakes out.”
White, most recently seen on CBS’ Me, Myself & I, hasn’t donned Urkel’s iconic suspenders since Family Matters wrapped in 1998, but I can’t imagine a better reason to strap ’em back on.

I don’t know how they would get away with it at this point. White was starting to outgrow Urkel in look even in the last seasons of Family Matters now add over 10 years..
He sold an invention or three and finally said “hey look, a belt and relaxed fit khakis”
To keep true to the character, the belt can be red or crazy. Nerdy stuff is in, but dweeb is not.
That 30th Anniversary is serious contuinty issue. Even bigger contuinity issue than DJ’s and Danny’s birthdays, Lance Bass and DJ’s graduation date.
In Full House, Joey and Jesse moved in BEFORE school year started, yet in Fuller House, that “exact day” happened after October, which DJ mentioned earlier episode.
Urkel doesn’t even have to wear the suspenders or be the same person he was in the 90s. A lot of people change over the years. I think it would be fun to see how he evolved or if he’s still pretty much the same.
yeah I agree they shouldn’t have to make him do that, I mean come on, even as an adult he probably wouldn’t sound like that
Perhaps Urkel could have evolved into a relatively normal looking guy but have a son or daughter who has his old look and mannerisms.

In fact, in the last season Urkel was evolving into a new look. I think he even lost the suspenders, but not too sure.

Grown-up Urkel should be a tech genius and entrepreneur who is cool/suave/normal. While being around the Tanners he slowly devolves back into the old Urkel behavior/mannerisms/voice.

I love the steve erk Le character I been binge watching family matters this winter.
I love Fuller house and would love to see Steve Urkel on an episode. Can’t wait to see many more episodes of Fuller house.
That would be a great idea to bring the Steve urkel character to fuller house but it would be very odd to see a grown man playing that character these days.
It would be sad if Urkel appears on Fuller House before Michelle. I still don’t understand why, if the showrunners know by now that there’s virtually zero chance of Mary-Kate and/or Ashley ever coming back, they won’t seriously consider recasting the role. Honestly, I don’t think it would be perceived as a shot at the Olsen sisters, and fans would accept it at this point.
To me, it’s very odd that the Michelle character is not even referenced at all now and there’s no interaction at all between her and her two older sisters as well as Kimmy and their kids (via phone calls, emails, texts, cards/presents sent, etc) Seriously, you wonder- what kind of life does Michelle have working in fashion in NYC? Does she have any friends, a boyfriend? What led her to this and what happened to the sweet, adorable little girl from many years ago? It’s very strange.

I think Family Matters needs a spin off. The show ended with Steve and Laura being engaged and with Steve’s inventions and them having little nerd babies, there’s about a million possibilities for a sequel!
That would be awesome. And if he also comes back as Stefan.
Maybe have him be like Uncle Herbert off the Simpsons. Some kind of tech genius riches to rags to riches kind of story. Could have him start off as just some hobo off the street who lost his way in life and have him in a love triangle with Stephanie, and Kimmys brother.
He Probably Won’t Have On Suspenders Since He Ended Family Matters Without Them But Im Very Anxious To See This and Who Knows Maybe Just Like With Family Matters He’ll Get a Permanent Role

I’m not sure an adult Urkel would be work. The character worked best as a kid. However, Fuller House has been terrific, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it somehow pulled off an adult Urkel.
I loved Steve Urkel I would get picked on for wearing glasses & when I would watch family Matters it would bring it would cheer me up it a heart warming show I would watch family matters with my whole family. Yes would asome to see Steve Urkel back to its time🤣🤣🤣 Did I do that hehe hehe snooooooooooooooooooort. Lol🤣🤣
Didn’t he split himself into Steve Urkel/Stefan Urquelle during the last couple of seasons of Family Matters? If Jaleel White doesn’t want to do Urkel, why not bring Urquelle in?
