Advertising and Fake News Websites Pop-Ups

Hi! About a week or 2 weeks ago my computer got a bad virus where it would try and force me to buy this fake anti-virus program and it wouldn't let me run my own anti-virus software. Thanks to a friend, my computer was fixed and it no longer does this, however, for the past week while I'm on the internet these random advertisement and fake news websites keep popping up without me clicking anything. I ran an AVG anti-virus scan to see if something was still wrong with my computer and it seems that my friend was unable to remove all of the viruses and the AVG scan keeps mentioning a lot of Trojan horse Adload files in windows\system32 and is unable to remove them. I'm hoping you guys can help me fix my computer for good. Here's my HijackThis file, thanks for you time!

Welcome. Thank you for using Dell Community Forums.

I am reviewing your log. In the meantime, you can help me by addressing the following:

* Have you have posted this issue on another forum? If so, please provide a link to the topic.

* If you have disabled System Restore in an attempt to begin cleaning malware, please enable it now. We will flush System Restore when we are finished cleaning and we are sure that everything is running smoothly.

* If you are using any cracked software, please remove it. In addition to being illegal, when you install cracked software, you are running executable files from dubious, unknown sources. You are giving these sources access to information on your hard disk, and potential control over operation of your computer. Definition of cracked software HERE.

* If you are using any P2P (file sharing) programs, please remove them before we clean your computer.  The nature of such software and the high incidence of malware in files downloaded with them is counter productive to restoring your PC to a healthy state. That includes BitTorrent and similar programs. There is a partial list HERE.

* If this computer belongs to someone else, do you have authority to apply the fixes we will use?

* After we begin working, please print or copy all instructions to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out procedures. Please follow all instructions in sequence. Do not, on your own, install/re-install any programs or run any fixes or scanners that you have not been instructed to use because this may cause conflicts with the tools that I am using. Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate. It is understood by the trained analysts that once a helper replies to a log, he continues working with you until the issue is resolved.

* During the course of our cleanup please do not do any additional online work or surfing until we have verified that your system is clean.

* We may be using some specialized tools during our fix. Certain embedded files that are part of legitimate programs or specialized fix tools such as process.exe, restart.exe, SmiUpdate.exe, reboot.exe, ws2fix.exe, prcviewer.exe and nircmd.exe may at times be detected by some anti-virus/anti-malware scanners as a "RiskTool", "Hacking tool", "Potentially unwanted tool", or even "malware (virus/trojan)" when that is not the case. Such programs have legitimate uses in contexts where an authorized user or administrator has knowingly installed it. These detections do not necessarily mean the file is malware or a bad program. It means it has the potential for being misused by others. Anti-virus scanners cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert you or even automatically remove them.

We need to see some additional information about what is happening in your machine.

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool.
  • Click Yes at the prompt for Optional Scan.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs

1. DDS.txt
2. Attach.txt

  • Save both reports to your desktop.
  • Copy/paste both logs to your reply on the forum. Do not attach them.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.

Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet. Information on A/V control HERE.

No Reply within 3 days will result in this topic being closed, and I will remove it from my subscriptions. If you require more time, please let me know.

Instructions posted for this user are customized for this user only. The tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections. If you think you have similar problems, please post a log at the top of this board to start a new forum topic.

Thank you so much for helping me! I really appreciate it. :)

*This is the only forum I have posted to about this issue.

*I haven't disabled System Restore.

*I don't have any cracked software.

*I don't have any file sharing programs as well.

*This is my personal laptop that only I use.

*I understand and I'll follow all of your instructions.

Here are my DDS and Attach logs:

It appears that you recently installed AVG. What anti-virus were you using before AVG?

Let's run a scan with MBAM. * If you are unable to download or install MBAM on your computer, see if you can use a friend's or family member's computer to download MBAM. Use the update link mentioned below to manually update. Once downloaded, rename the program installer "mbam-setup.exe" file to something else like "lookinhere.exe". Copy the installer file and the update file to a CD or flash drive. Transfer the files to the infected computer. Install the "lookinhere.exe" file, then run the update so that you will have the current definitions. After that, run a full system scan and select to have the program REMOVE whatever it finds.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link

  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.

MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.

  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates,
manually download them from here
and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer,
copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes'
Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.

On the Scanner tab:

  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top.
It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully.
Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.

Back at the main Scanner screen:

  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report into your next reply and exit MBAM.

Note:-- If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,
you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process.
Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately.
Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

-- MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine.
If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes (like Spybot's Teatimer),
they may interfere with the fix or alert you after scanning with MBAM.
Please disable such programs until disinfection is complete or permit them to allow the changes.

**If you need to re-install MBAM but encounter issue in re-installing, try using the MBAM Cleanup Utility by downloading it from HERE

Initially, I was using McAfee that came with my laptop, however, when I went back to school I had to download their anti-virus program called Sophos Anti-virus in order to get on the internet at college and Sophos required all other anti-virus software to be removed, so I had to get rid of McAfee. :\  I finished up college this past may and have removed Sophos since then since I found it a huge pain, but I'm still sorting through all of my stuff from school and haven't found the disc that contains McAfee so until I installed AVG I was relying on Windows Firewall and Windows Defender.

Here is my MBAM report, thanks!

Good job. We have more to do.

You have Viewpoint installed. Viewpoint developed a behavioral targeting product in 2006. Viewpoint is associated with a program called viewmgr.exe and the ViewPoint Media Player.
Viewpoint is bundled with AOL, AOL Instant Messenger, Adobe Atmosphere, Netscape 7, etc and sometimes not mentioned in the license agreement. Hardware manufacturers pre-install some of these applications.
ViewPoint Toolbar will redirect your search queries and also transmits non personally identifiable information back to their servers. The Viewpoint Toolbar is listed is also classified as a threat in the CounterSpy Threat Library because it hijacks your search queries and also transmits non personally identifiable information back to their servers.
Viewpoint Manager is a media player often bundled with AIM software. Viewpoint Manager is a useless add on.
Because Viewpoint's software will track your web surfing and tailor advertisements based on the web pages you are visiting, I suggest you remove the program.
** Note: Removing Viewpoint Media Player may cause the program that bundled it to not function as intended. For AOL and AIM it is needed to use their 3D icons known as Super Buddies and for customized themes, etc.
If you wish to remove Viewpoint, end process on ViewManager in Task Manager.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
  • Viewpoint Toolbar
  • Viewpoint Experience Technology

Following that, remove the Viewpoint folder in your Program Files.

Download and scan each user profile with CCleaner (a good utility to keep and use regularly.):

http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds

** Select to download the SLIM version.

** Because CCleaner removes everything in temp folders, if you have anything saved in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner.

** We will be cleaning cookies as well. Make a note of any passwords, etc. that you want to save. If you do not want to delete cookies, simply uncheck that option.

1. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

2. Then select the items you wish to clean up. In the Windows Tab:

  • Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section.
  • Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section
  • Clean all entries in the "System" section.
  • Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
  • Clean any others that you choose. In the Applications Tab:
  • Clean all in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
  • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
  • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
  • Clean any others that you choose.

3. Click the "Analyze" button. When the list of files comes up, click the "Run Cleaner" button.

4. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.

5. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.

6. Click "exit" when done. REBOOT.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 21  to your Desktop.
  • You will find it here: http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4648
  • Click the "Download" button. Make sure you do not by accident download any of the other programs advertised on that page.
  • Do not install it yet.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.  It appears that you have these two installed: Java(TM) 6 Update 16
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each of the Java versions.
    Close Add/Remove.

* In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\Java =this folder. Delete any subfolders.
* Do NOT delete C:\Program Files\ JavaVM =this folder, if found!
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u21-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version. NOTE: As always during installations, beware of any pre-checked option to install a toolbar. If you do not want it, UNcheck it.

Delete the downloaded installation file after completing the above procedure and reboot if not prompted to do so.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications.

To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it:

* Go to Start-->Control Panel-->Java-->Advanced-->Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter.

* Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Finally, please post a fresh HijackThis log and let me know how things are running.

Okay! I only found Viewpoint Media Player so I got rid of that. I ran the CCleaner scan and installed Java Quick Starter too. :) Also, lately a box keeps popping up saying that windows host operation has stopped and it recommended that I run windows update, but when I run windows update I get the error code: Code 80072EFE. Does this have something to do with this virus on my computer too? :\  Here's my HijackThis log:

Often the malware does prevent users from accessing Windows Update. In addition, I do not know exactly what changes your friend helping you may have made, so I cannot be sure which one to attribute the updating problem to.

Did you delete the Viewpoint folder here? C:\Program Files\Viewpoint Usually that service is deleted when viewpoint is removed.

Please run a scan with HijackThis and place a checkmark next to the following:

R3 - URLSearchHook: AOLTBSearch Class - {EA756889-2338-43DB-8F07-D1CA6FB9C90D} - C:\Program Files\AOL\AIM Toolbar 5.0\aoltb.dll (file missing)

O23 - Service: Viewpoint Manager Service - Viewpoint Corporation - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe

Close all other windows and click "Fix Checked". Close HijackThis, and reboot.

Take a look at this page, and see if you can let FixIt reset the Windows Update components automatically:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

If that does not work, let me know so we can look a bit deeper.
Please post a fresh HijackThis log and let me know how things are running.

Oops, forgot to delete the Viewpoint folder last time, sorry about that! Viewpoint is deleted and I ran HijackThis fixing the items you listed. I went to the website and ran the Fixit on default and aggressive and I'm still getting the same error code. Here's the latest HijackThis log.

Please download GMER Rootkit Scanner from HERE or HERE
Unzip it to your Desktop.

========================================================

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.

1. Double-click on the AVG Tray Icon on the bottom right.
2. Double-click on "AVG Resident Shield"
3. And uncheck "Turn on AVG Resident Shield Protection" then click OK. Remember to turn it back on after the scan.

========================================================

Double-click gmer.exe. The program will begin to run.

**Caution**
These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries unless advised by a trained Security Analyst

If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan.

* Click Yes.
* Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity.
* Click OK.
* GMER will produce a log.

* Once done, click the Copy button.
This will copy the results to your clipboard.

* Please post that log in your next reply.

**NOTE: Warning! Please, do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan.

If you're having problems with running GMER.exe, try it in safe mode.

Go ahead and delete GMER.

Try running a scan at Microsoft:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm

The malware may have changed your router settings, so if you continue to have problems with Windows Updates you may have to reset your router. . Discussion here:
http://www.vistaheads.com/forums/microsoft-public-windowsupdate/181403-re-error-code-80072efe.html

Let me know how that goes. If we need to keep digging, we will. :emotion-1:

I had quite a bit of trouble running GMER.  My computer crashed unexpectedly 3 times in both regular and safe mode before I could finally get the GMER log copied and pasted. GMER never asked me any of the 4 times I ran it if I would like to perform a scan after I double-clicked on it to run it, so I hope that it's okay that I ran the scan myself. Here's the results of it:

GMER 1.0.15.15281 - http://www.gmer.net

Windows 6.0.6002 Service Pack 2
Running: gmer.exe; Driver: C:\Users\Chelsea\AppData\Local\Temp\pflyypog.sys

I think the problem is getting worse. :( When I try to click on the forum link you gave me I get the error: "Problem Loading Page, The Connection was Reset" and I also get this error when I try to post a reply to this forum, plus I'm still getting random ad sites popping up and windows update gets the same error still. I'm posting this reply via my father's laptop and his computer doesn't have any trouble going to the forum; it seems only my computer is having the connection error trouble. I looked at the forum and one topic was talking about changing something with the ISA Server, which was all above my head in terms of understanding and the link you gave me had 1 link for an update for microsoft office, which I didn't think applied to me since I'm not trying to update Microsoft office, I'm trying to update Windows or changing the router settings which I'm not sure how to do or if I should since everyone in my household uses the same router and I'm the only one with this trouble.

I deleted GMER and ran the scan at Microsoft. Microsoft cleared out some things but it said it was unable to clear out everything. Here's a screencap of the result of the scan (hopefully you're able to see it):

Thanks for sticking with me by the way: I really appreciate it so much!

Please read carefully and follow these steps.

  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop.
  • Once extracted, open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.

  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure Make sure that is selected. Click on Continue.

  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.

  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.

  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.___log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Excellent! Sometimes it's just a matter of pinpointing the problem and running the right tools in the right sequence. Please see if you can update Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to at least database 4577. Then run a new scan and post the log for me. Let me know if everything is running smoothly .If so we'll clean up our tools and flush System Restore. Thanks.
