Warning: Contains spoilers for Incredibles 2.

As with any Pixar movie, Incredibles 2 is absolutely packed with Easter eggs and references that you won't catch on one viewing.

To help you out though, we've picked out some of the most notable – and some of our favourites – in the long-awaited sequel. (Though we can't yet help you out with the secret Toy Story 4 Easter egg as we probably won't know it until we see Toy Story 4.)

1. John Ratzenberger

Pixar's lucky charm John Ratzenberger – who has appeared in every single movie to date – reprises his role as villain The Underminer as the sequel picks up straight after the first movie ended. Bonus reference, the bank he robs is the Municiberg Credit Union, AKA the MCU. Get it?

2. Jack-Jack and Mozart

In The Incredibles, babysitter Kari says she's going to play Jack-Jack some Mozart to help his development, which we hear in short Jack-Jack Attack as he displays his powers for the first time. After Jack-Jack spends a night with Edna Mode in Incredibles 2, Edna tells Bob that Jack-Jack enjoys Mozart – and some fans think it's actually Mozart's music that triggered his powers.

3. A113

As with Ratzenberger, A113 – a reference to the classroom where Pixar's big names studied – is a constant in Pixar movies and in Incredibles 2, it appears several times throughout, including on the front of a train, on an office in DEVTECH and on the cinema marquee at the end of the movie as Violet goes on a date with Tony, going to see DementiA 113.

4. 1960s setting

Talking of DementiA 113, it's also a nod to Francis Ford Coppola's Dementia 13, released in 1963 which fits in with the timeline of both Incredibles movies. (Yes, they're set in the early '60s – a fact that escaped most viewers). Further nods to the movie's 1960s setting is the fact that the Parr family's TV viewing of choice includes The Outer Limits and Johnny Quest, both of which aired in the early-to-mid 1960s.

5. Ghostbusters

Evelyn Deavor attempts to put Elastigirl's mind at ease when it's seemingly revealed that the Screenslaver was a pizza delivery guy. "Einstein was a patent clerk," she argues, a fact that Peter Venkman also uses in Ghostbusters to reassure Ray that everything would be alright. Of course, it turns out that Evelyn is the real Screenslaver so her name is a cunning play on 'evil endeavour', hinting at the movie's twist.

6. Chinese takeaway

Since their house was destroyed at the end of the first movie, the Parrs are staying in a motel in the sequel and they get Chinese takeaway from the same place that we saw in Inside Out, A Bug's Life, Ratatouille, Toy Story 2 and Monsters Inc, although the design was slightly different in the latter.

7. Poltergeist

One of Jack-Jack's numerous powers (17, so far) is the ability to travel to a different dimension, although he can still be heard. This is a nod to Poltergeist – which also starred Craig T Nelson as the father of a suburban family – where the family's youngest child goes into a different dimension and can be heard, only she's pleading for help and not for a cookie.

8. Pizza Planet truck

At the end of Elastigirl's chase after the fake Screenslaver, the beloved Pizza Planet truck can be seen next to her as she lands next to the building where he was captured, rectifying director Brad Bird's oversight in not including it in the first movie (although it was seen in the video game).

9. DC references

Fittingly for its '60s setting, Incredibles 2 features a couple of nods to Batman, as the Batmobile sound effect plays when the Incredibile (more on that in a bit) goes into the water. There's also a faint Bat Signal spotted in the sky next to DEVTECH. A bit cheekier though is a bit of DC shade when Elastigirl sees her new silver and black costume and describes it as a bit "dark and angsty".

10. Documentary footage

After the Parr family and Frozone fail to prevent the Underminer's bank heist and cause a lot of damage in the process, TV news reports of the chaos feature images from the documentary we saw at the start of the first movie where Mr Incredible, Frozone and Elastigirl were interviewed about superheroes.

11. Incredibile

The fate of Mr Incredible's car, the Incredibile, is revealed in the sequel as he spots it on TV when it's about to be auctioned off. He thinks about stealing it, but instead just activates it to scare the people there. However, later in the movie, Dash uses the remote control to bring the car to the house, just in time to save Dash, Violet and Jack-Jack from the Screenslaver's minions.

12. Luxo Ball

Pixar's iconic Luxo Ball is, of course, present in Incredibles 2, only not as a ball, but a picture of the ball on Jack-Jack's crib. A 1960s version of the lamp also appears in a room in the Parr family's new home.

Incredibles 2 is out now in the US and is released in the UK on July 13. Book tickets here.
