The Best Hotels In Boracay 2020

This article is more than 4 years old.

Boracay never gets old. Over the past few decades, this idyllic tropical destination has undergone several transformations and phases. In the early 80s, the first few visitors of the island reveled at the pristine white shores and crystal blue waters of this untouched piece of heaven on earth. There were only a handful of resorts back them, most of which ran on generators and the charm of geckos keeping guest company by nightfall.

The island and its unparalleled beauty soon grew popular, drawing thousands of guests each year. Within a few years, the idyllic destination became a go-to place hedonistic fetes. There were week-long festivities (like Bora Bound and Laboracay) that brought party-philes from all corners of the globe to its shores. This subsequently saw the building of more touristic establishments: restaurants, hotels, clubs and yes, even its very own Starbucks and McDonalds. Many call this the beginning of the end.

By 2018, the rehabilitation of the island was implemented, forcing the island to close for six full months. The idea was to shut down so that the island could recover. Waste and sewerage systems were so badly mismanaged that some reports revealed how toxic waste was flowing out into the ocean. Allegedly, a good number of establishment were also operating without proper compliance for environmental policies.

It has only been a few months since the island once again welcomed visitors. Shores are back to its pristine condition. Visitors, it's been reported, can now get a good night’s rest without having to contend with party music from a nearby bar. Boracay has recovered and there is now new reason to return or, in the case of those who have not yet been, to finally visit.

Here, your guide to the best hotels on the island, post rehab:

DISCOVERY SHORES is an immediate favorite among island regulars. Conveniently located on Station 3, this beach front gem offers the full five-star experience, privacy and access to the action. From the pier, you get on a private speed boat that takes you on a short, scenic ride to the resort. A soothing foot bath awaits guests just after settling into your room.

The resort's Signature Suites are exquisitely done following modern tropical design ideals. It features a large master’s bedroom, a second room and a living area. The suite also has its own balcony complete with infinity plunge pools. I suggest that you request for a private dinner set up in your balcony on the last night of your stay. It’s a great way to cap off a memorable holiday.

Service at Discovery is unparalleled. Every time guests return from a quick dip or a stroll along the beach, their lounge beds are tidied up by attentive staff. Sometimes, staff will even offer a tray of cold cucumbers and towels for refreshing under the sun.

THE LIND BORACAY is ideal for travelers looking to fully disconnect and recharge. Tucked towards the end of Station 3, The Lind is a sprawling space that melds modern design against a tropical backdrop. I was billeted in a suite that had a massive balcony with views of the ocean and the pool deck. It was ideal for quiet mornings looking out into the ocean. On some days, I escaped the noise of the beach to return to my balcony for front row views of the most stunning sunset.

Everything about Lind is intimate, tranquil, discreet yet utterly luxurious. Its beach ensures that you have enough privacy and quiet to fully take in the island’s beauty. When staying at The Lind, one need not step out for good food either. The resort’s beach cafe, Crust, can serve up a killer brick oven pizza. Looking for a legit proper cocktail? Mixologists at +36 Lounge know how to make the perfect Old Fashioned. In fact, I'd say that +36 is one of the very few establishments that actually know how to get cocktails rights.

COAST BORACAY brings all sorts of good vibes to the Boracay holiday. The concept is simple, witty and absolutely adorable—FUN MEETS SUN. You check into suites that are inspired by contemporary Philippine designs. Colors are bright yet soothing with just about every amenity you could possibly need for a fun-filled holiday.

It’s the small, thoughtful details that distinguish the Coast from others. In the mornings, you are served pancakes with your name on it. Turndown can also sometimes come in the form of a lovely cheese platter and a bottle of vino. Another reason for staying at Coast are the art-inspired elements that permeate throughout the property: black and white photography along halls, digital art work by the pool, and exquisite weaves from Mindanao. You need not go far for dancing, delicious “sunshine” cuisine and “sundown” happy hours.

SHANGRI-LA BORACAY RESORT is island indulgence taken to the next level. As soon as you land, you are escorted to a chic, private lounge where you await transfers. A private speed boat takes you to the property’s own pier where you are welcomed by live music and dancing. Check in is seamless and those few minutes lounging at the open air lobby is enough to set the mood for an unforgettable island holiday.

There are several types of rooms and suites but I would highly recommend the villas. The Tree Top Villa is an singular experience of luxury on the island. Perched high above the ground, these charming abodes offer spectacular views of the ocean. The 216-square-meter space features a well appointed master’s bedroom at the lower floor and bathrooms that look out into the clear blue waters. The balcony and living area is so cozy that you’ll want to stay in on some days. Sunsets are also a great time to relax and refresh at the private balcony that comes complete with a Jacuzzi tub.

Located on the other side of the island, far from all the hustle and bustle of the other stations, Shangri-La Boracay is a sanctuary for those looking to truly escape. There’s hardly any need to leave the premises. You’ll find that you have everything necessary for an indulgent stay: The Chi Spa, fine and casual dining options as well as a private stretch of white sandy beach.

CRIMSON RESORT AND SPA is one of the newer luxury hotels on the island that proposes a new approach to island luxury. The resort refers to its very private location as Station Zero, hinting at a completely different experience from what most visitors have grown accustomed to when heading to Boracay. The property boasts breathtaking views and exclusive access to 3,000-square-meters of immaculate shores and divine ocean waters. Crimson was built following minimalist design aesthetics that blend seamlessly with the island’s natural landscape.

The resort is home to all types of travelers: whether it be a large group, the solo jet setter or couples on a romantic getaway. The hotel’s spa facility is exceptional and must not be missed when at the Crimson. There are also fun water sports and activities to be enjoyed while on this tropical sanctuary. For those looking to party, the hotel is host to epic foam parties every Saturday.

HENNAN PRIME BEACH RESORT is located on the beach front of Station 1, and is an ideal luxury destination. Villas and suites are designed to highlight modern coastal sensibilities. Each is equipped with all the amenities needed for a truly luxurious island experience—and that includes free WiFi access. What distinguishes Hennan accommodations from others is that rooms have direct access to the pool. From your private balcony, one can literally jump into the water!

The Sea Salt Café is a place for indulging in a wide range of flavors. Discover the best of beachside dining as the café prepares a hearty buffet every evening. Ala carte dishes are also optional, with many specialties inspired by the day’s freshest catch.

MOVENPICK RESORT AND SPA BORACAY is a hidden island gem located on on the northern tip in the Punta Bunga Cove. The property is surrounded by verdant greens and offers private access to pristine shores, far away from the noise of the main strip. The property has over 300 suites, each dressed and styled to reflect hushed elegance. Rooms are also set up so that guests can enjoy five star amenities to include an impressive mini bar.

Although far from the action, there is a whole different experience that await at Movenpick. Refresh in the resort’s picturesque multi-level pool while sipping on creative cocktails from the Sol Marina Beach Club. True to Movenpick’s ethos for creating moments, guests can also ask the dedicated concierge to organize cliff diving excursions, a game of golf or a sky lantern ritual by the beach.

If food is big on your travel itinerary, then Movenpick has you covered. The property is home to various dining outlets among them a sports pub, pool bar, an all day dining café and Asian gril and bar. Don’t miss the freshly baked pizza straight out of the wood fired oven at Brezza. They also have an impressive aperitivo and wine menu.
