seriously i do NOT know what is the difference between furry and anthro art.
the only one here i fully can call furry is #2 as what i see as "traditional" furry is a cartoon face, big googly eyes, furry human body and often with funky colors or markings. (typical for fursuits too but i do see LOTS of realistic ones which i preferr) but the other 3? what is anthro what is furry!
what bothers me is anthro artists saying they are different than furry artists and it is shame that furry fandom had to be so negativly affected by the media getting a hold of a few freaks in the fandom and over exploiting their sick/strange views of the fandom.
not all furries are sickos
furry fandom is no different than anime fandom
both have adult stuff (anime has yaoi and hentai, Furry has yiff and furpile) but also have childrens stuff
they also both revolve around art forms as that is how both anime and furry is created/presented
and both have a WIDE variety of things to offer and wide variety of fans.
its all the same, the "enjoyment of anthro animals" is the deifinition of furry so ALL of these drawings here are furry characters....right?
any input? i mean is one of these really just anthro and not furry?
(edit:....DAMNIT i spelled hybrid as hybid >_< in the art piece
curse me and my inablity spell worth shit)

I also cannot seem to tell the difference. That's a good thing??
i'm what they call a "hafling" artist... i draw people, but with animal attributes.. likes ears, claws, tails.... but no heavy fur or muzzles most of the time.
i'm not that good at animal anatomy anyway ^___^;;

I agree people get uptight about it. But I don't think the bad rap furry has is just due to the media. People surfing around the internet and finding stuff is just as much at fault o___o
I'd forgotten how much of furry art is pr0n x___x

um yeah
i turned off the mature filter here at FA cause i am 22.....
30 minutes later i put it back on!!! >_<
i mean ew!
but anime fans have just as much friggen hentai porno fanart too...
but you don't see cosplayers getting bashed like fursuiters (and i have seen plenty of fan girl "hot yaoi" cosplay pile ups at cons :[
i see one more fan girl group egg-on a sasuke cosplayer to pretend to rape another cosplayer naruto i'm gonna be SICK)

It's cause it's animals....it's rather more unnerving. With people (in anime) you think "okay, fetish" with furries you can get confused. Bestiality comes into the thinking, I imagine.
But anime gets plenty bad rap too. Pedophilia runs rampant in both genres but I think anime is more often accused of it.
Still, among the geeks, furries are below anime I think, as far as popular opinion. But neither of us are terribly well received ;)

Hear hear! As far as I'm concerned, yes anthro and furry are the same thing! And I don't see anything wrong with that.
The anwser is very easy. Look in the dictionary.
Anthro can be -ANYTHING- having humanish look. Like, let's say WALMART as a head of a normal body (With a face that is)
Furries are also anthro, but specifically Anthro animals.

Well essentially furry = anthro.
Anthro - coming from anthropomorph - pretty much means anything thats humanized.
In furries case we humanize animals. (or animalize humans - same difference :P )
So furry art *IS* anthro art.
It's just that some artist feel better by calling their work "anthro art" and distancing themself from "furry art" because they see "furry art" as the art with all the yiffing eg. erotic anthro art :p
But by definition, they are about the very same thing, or rather - furry art can be seen as a sub-section of ANTHRO art. Specifically the animalistic type of anthro art.
Well enough of that xD

I honestly don't care whether there is a difference or not. As far as I'm concerned, there isn't.
I think a lot of people also use the "anthro artist" moniker as a way to signify that they're not lifestylers. I think that's the big difference between something like anime fandom and furry fandom--furry is an art style, but for som people it's also a lifestyle. So you see a lot of "I'm not a furry, I just draw anthros" for that reason, i think.
furry is based on pin up poster, magazine, caractured anthropomorphism while anthro art is based upon more deeper meaningful artwork, more realistic, more proportioned and more traditional.
Furry is more loose, casual and cartoony and moderenised with society while the themes of anthro art are normally based on the outside world and nature.

<_< I thought they were both the same thing... I agree with, Van-Weasel. But when I explain to non-furryish people, I say anthro. For some reason it's not as perverse as saying "Furry". Maybe CSI has cursed us or something. But, rock on, love your work. <3 If I had the means, I'd be wearing a fursuit of yours. <3
For me, I draw anthro creatures, but I don't consider myself as furry, scaley, or whatever else. I just consider myself an artist
To me, I always thought a furry is someone who takes the fandom up a notch and goes fursuiting and participates in the furcons

I have always seen furry as someone who likes anthropomorphic animals. So I think you are a furry if you like anthros. That doesn't mean it has to be sexual or anything and you have to be turned on by it. I also think there is a huge difference between furry and zoophiliac. I hated furries for the longest time until I started dating my mate. Since he is so huge into the fandom. So I started to see a more positive side and realized that not all furries have gross sick disgusting fetishes which I have seen a lot in the fandom. I'm also thinking about turning the mature filter off for that reason. Although I do like yiff and the artwork of some things. But it does not turn me on. I see it more of someone living in a different persepective if that makes sense. :)
Freak ye ya Foory fugs. Goddamn furries makin evrythin into furries. Anthros are any inhuman creature with humanoid body-shapes and/or human qualities. example: Greek Gods could be called Anthros. and furries fuggers like all you goddamn wastes of oxygen are human beings who are so fuggin delusional thad they wanna be dirty filthy creatures and they wanna fug dirty filthy creatures, cuz they hav brain disorders. Fuggin chinknigurdueshkyke (I'm nod racizt bud I uze slurz gainzd you fuggin' fags)
(ok fur real, I don't have a problem against furries if they don't make it their entire life's goal to be an animal or do the deed to animals. furry characters are somewhat fine)
