Melissa Ricks Recalls Second Childbirth Experience: “It was a little bit more traumatic”

Actress Melissa Ricks talked about her second childbirth experience on Instagram. She gave birth to her first child, Mikaela, with her non-showbiz husband, Michael Macatangay, on January 14, 2023.

The 33-year-old expressed that it was “a little bit more traumatic” and that she was terrified, as she had an intense labor.

“Labor was super intense, seemed like it went from 0-100 real quick! A lot of screaming and a lot of apologizing to the doctors and nurses (eksena ako masyado OR),” she wrote.

She emphasized how different her second childbirth was from her first, although she had the same doctors and hospital. The actress further said that she thought the difficult part was over, but another challenge came along the way.

“I stayed 10hrs in the recovery room (mika&I) because rooms were all full. When we did get a room, We ended up staying in the hospital for 6 days after I gave birth.. I thought we were going to go home the next day, since hospital was also full and I was Fine.. We already had our bags packed and ready to go when our Pedia came in and said we had to stay.” [sic] she recalled.

Melissa also revealed that Mikaela’s bilirubin levels were extremely high and may cause permanent damage. Bilirubin is a yellow substance that replaces old red blood cells. A high level of it can lead to yellow discoloration on the baby’s skin and whites of the eyes, called jaundice.

“I didnt know, that what I knew as Jaundice could be dangerous, I thought all we needed was a little sun, which is normal for newborns, but in Mikas case, since me and her father had different blood types and Mika got her dads blood type (ganun pala un) it caused her bilirubin levels to be dangerously high,” [sic] she explained.

She said that they ended up staying in the hospital for six days, and Mikaela underwent photo light therapy.

“6 days of holding her in our arms, barely any sleep since I didnt want to drop her, night and day under the Photolight therapy machine, with no air conditioning (because she will get cold and was wearing a diaper only, and couldn’t wear clothes for the therapy) It was so hard and lots of tears from this momma,” [sic] she continued.

The actress concluded her post by thanking all the doctors and nurses, including Michael, who took care of them.

Melissa shares a daughter, Keira Kiely, with her former partner Charles Togezaki. In May 2021, she and Michael tied the knot in California.
